The first English and European settlers arrived in the area now known as Onslow County, North Carolina, in 1713, attracted by the longleaf pine forests and beautiful waterways. Onslow County was formed in 1734, named after the Speaker of the British House of Commons. Onslow County was primarily a collection of sparsely maritime and agrarian communities but that changed dramatically with the establishment of Army’s Camp Davis in the early 1940s and the creation of Camp Lejeune in 1941. The gently rolling terrain of Onslow County stretches over 767 miles found in the southeastern coastal plain of the state, approximately 50 miles north of Wilmington and 120 miles east of Raleigh.
Jacksonville is the county seat and the county's major population centers surround the city. Onslow County is home to more than 185,000 residents and includes the incorporated towns of North Topsail Beach, Swansboro, Holly Ridge, Richlands, part of Surf City, and unincorporated Sneads Ferry. Also in Onslow are the 156,000 acres that comprise Camp Lejeune, the U.S. Marine Corps Base where more than 43,000 sailors and marines are stationed. With over thirty miles of gorgeous beaches, ocean and rivers teeming with marine life, and wildlife-filled forests, Onslow County is the ultimate outdoor recreation destination. Additionally, the county is home to the 40-mile long New River which is the only continental U.S. river with mouth and headwaters in the same county.
